How to activate "Speakable Items" (the voice command application that is already installed in your Mac OS X system):

1. Click on the Apple logo (top left)

2. Click on "System Preferences"

3. Click on "Speech" (bottom row)

4. When the "Speech" window opens, choose "On"

5. For best results, click on "Listening" in the window shown above and choose "Listen only while key is pressed".

(You will find that your Mac is more responsive in this mode because the computer is not constantly using processing power to listen for your commands and distinguish them from background noise etc... In this mode it only listens when you press the "Esc" key.)

6. Place your mic as far from your speakers as possible.

7. To calibrate your mic, click on "Listening" and then click "Volume."

How to see what commands are available to say?
Say "Show me what to say" or "Open Speakable Items" after you have turned Speech Recognition on. (And remember to press the Esc key or whichever key you have designated at the same time.)

How to make something "speakable" that's not already in the available command list?
Simply highlight the file or document name, or the website URL in your browser, and say "Make this speakable" and follow then follow the instructions.

NOTE: After you make an item "speakable", it may take just a few moments before you can begin speaking the command.
